| AGASTACHE foeniculum - Anise Hyssop |
![]()
Lamiaceae; native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean. Germination: Best sown indoors at a temperature of 68-70° and with no cover as light aids in germination. Expect germination in 10-15 days. Seeds can also be sown outdoors during late spring. Outdoors, sow with barely any cover. Growth: Transplant when there are at least two sets of true leaves. Space 18-24 inches apart in full sun to very light shade. Site in a slightly alkaline, average moisture, well-drained soil. Divide every few years, as needed. Appearance and Use: This culinary herb also makes an ornamental addition to borders and rock gardens. It grows as an upright mound from 18-24 inches tall and spreads 24-36 inches wide. In mid to late summer the tubular, two-lipped, blue flowers appear and attract bees and butterflies all the while. The gray-green foliage is fragrant with an anise flavor and is used as seasoning and to make an herb tea. Harvest the leaves by cutting the entire plant when it is in early flower. Use the leaves fresh or hang the plant upside down in a cool dark place to dry the leaves for storage. |

"To own a bit of ground, to scratch it with a hoe, to plant seeds and watch their renewal of life-this is the commonest delight of the race, the most satisfactory thing a man can do." |
