ACHILLEA species Milfoil, Yarrow Zones 3-10
 å-kil’le-å Perennial Easy

Asteraceae; native to Europe and Asia.

Germination: The fine seed requires light to germinate, so leave it uncovered. Sow outdoors anytime in spring or summer, up to two months before frost. Or sow indoors, maintaining a temperature of 70° F. Germination takes 10 days.

Growth: In spring or fall, space seedlings 1-2 feet apart in full sun in average to poor, but well drained soil. Keep the soil moist, avoid overhead watering if possible and fertilize lightly. Taller species may require staking. Wait until the plants are dormant before transplanting. Achillea blooms the first year from seed, and the flowers may be cut when they are fully open. Tolerates poor soil.

Appearance and Use: Easy-to-grow, carefree plants add color to borders, rock gardens, or naturalized areas. The blooms are excellent for arrangements, both fresh and dried. Drought-resistant perennials display fern-like foliage and flat, 2- to 6-inch bloom clusters. The blooms of white, golden yellow, or red-violet are borne in June and will repeat in September if the plants are cut back after initial flowering.

Species:

A. filipendulina (Fernleaf Yarrow) — Gold to yellow blooms on 2- to 21/2 foot plants.

A. millefolium (Common Yarrow) — White, red, pink, yellow, or orange blooms on 18-30 inch plants.

A. tomentosa (Wooly Yarrow) — Yellow blooms on 6-16 inch plants.

Gardeners' Quotes

Excerpted from the Foreward, by Jim Wilson, of Karen Park Jennings' book, Success with Seed

"I hope that you will use the solid, time-tested information in this book to launch you on a lifetime hobby of starting from seeds. One of the fringe benefits that will grow from it will be a yearly surplus of seedlings...Neighbors will come to see you as a cross between the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and Johnny Appleseed.."
